Getting on his bike for Atlantic rowers

10 June 2005

BRUMMY cyclist Colin Willetts is to make another 170-mile long distance ride to Beer to support the four lads undertaking the Woodvale Trans-Atlantic rowing race in November.

Colin, who pedalled his way from his home in Great Barr, Birmingham, to Beer in 2001 to raise £500 for Puffins Playgroup, is now 67 but doesn't let that deter him from the challenge.

He told the Herald: "I still cannot resist a reason to try the ride again - for a good cause."

Brothers Justin, 25 and Robert Adkin, 22, and their cousins Martin Adkin, 19, and James Green, 23, are due to set sale from La Gomera in the Canary Isles to Antigua in the Caribbean, on November 27.

The 24-foot boat All Relative, officially named by yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, has been blessed in a ceremony at Beer conducted by the Reverend Anne Thorne.

Colin, a member of the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists, learned of their 2,937-mile Atlantic crossing and said: "What a marvellous project to attempt. I take my cycle helmet off to them."

"They have already rowed the boat from Exmouth to Beer to have it blessed and the vicar has also said she will bless my bike - I might need it this time!"

Colin will set off at 1.30am from Birmingham on Friday, June 24, to raise as much money as he can towards the rowers' expenses.

He said: "I intend to raise money only from the Midlands as I am sure Devon people have already given, but I am being provided with a support car for emergencies only and feeding, by Sue Prince of Vaughan Insurance Brokers of Crewkerne.

"I hope to be in Beer by early afternoon on the 24th."

Colin, who has raced cycles for more than 20 years and rides a tandem with his wife Diane, has a special fondness for Beer. He and Diane have holidayed in the village for more than 20 years.
