At 10:21GMT we received a phone call from the Coast Guard in Falmouth, UK. We were informed that the EPIRB onboard Tuzhangya with Hungarian oceanrowers had been activated. After we provided the officer on duty with the satphone number of the rowers and he contacted them, we were informed that EPIRB had been activated by water that splashed into the cabin. We don't know if it happened because the cabin hatch was open or for any other reason, but the officer on duty confirmed that though the connection was very poor he understood that the rowers were safe, they did not ask for rescue and they could see a Moroccan Coast Guard power boat 500 meters away from their boat. He also confirmed that It was the intention of the crew to go to shore, though it was not clear if they would be towed there by the power boat. |
