Day 27

16:22hrs

Swell and wind entire day

Checked food stores
Everything is on rations.
Problem – meals for 2 persons only have enough calories for 1 person.

Considered scheduled toilet times to increase rowing time but decided this was a little over the top.

Large male logger head turtle spotted to starboard. We went back to find it. On approach two dorada were feeding on small fish under the turtle. Scott – “it’s a shark no a fish! get the gun.”

Tried shooting the dorada but did not get the angle right.
6 other small striped fish joined Nemo.

Orca popped up while Scott was rowing. Same size as boat. No; bigger. Brett came out with camera. Did not manage to capture orca surfing just under water behind boat. Kodak moment stored in mind only.

Brett saw dorada feeding on new fish stock under boat. Right after orca sighting. Tried shooting – no luck. Shot bait fish. Hooked onto fishing rod and within 5 minutes caught small dorada. Used the stomach for new bait.

Decided to let out all the line to see if there were any other fish following outside of doradas territory. Caught weird jaw cracker fish. School following the boat. Scott shot another 3 fish for supper. They have barb on dorsal fin. Worried that barb poisonous. Not much flesh but not bad tasting when hungry. We were and it was!

Giant kingfisher looking bird – grey plumage, big yellow bill.

Decided 2 cut down the rests and are more efficient in changeovers

No F#$%ing fish! They swim so close to boat but as soon as spear gun comes out, they scatter…
