62-year-old to cross Pacific with single oar

 
OSAKA — A 62-year-old Japanese man from Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, on Thursday set sail on a solo trans-Pacific cruise with only a single oar to power his yacht.

Ikuo Tateo left from Taneichi, Iwate Prefecture, Thursday morning bound for the West Coast of the United States. His 7-meter boat is equipped with a 5-meter oar at the stern and a small mast in the bow. (Kyodo News)
