 Le trophée Peter Bird/SPB récompense un aventurier
qui s’est illustré par un engagement au long cours dans un milieu extrême.

Cette année, à titre d’hommage posthume il a été décerné à Jean-Christophe Lafaille,
disparu à l’âge de 40 ans pendant l’hiver 2006 sur les flancs du Makalu.

Juste un mot pour dire qu’au delà de la différence de milieux entre la haute montagne où s’exprimait Jean-Christophe
et les océans qu’explorait Peter, il y a un lien profond qui unit les deux hommes.

Peu importe le théâtre choisi lorsque c’est l’esprit d’aventure que l’on célèbre. L’histoire de la ténacité et du courage
s’écrit aussi bien sur un sommet de l’Himalaya qu’au milieu du Pacifique.

Tous deux, Peter et Jean-Christophe, vivaient dans la compagnie du danger.
Tous deux prenaient des risques qu’ils avaient mesurés et dont ils connaissaient la sanction.
Tous deux avaient à l’avance accepté d’avoir à payer un jour le prix de la vie qu’ils s’étaient choisie.

Celui qui donne son nom au trophée a laissé un sillage dans l’écume ;
celui qui le reçoit cette année a laissé une trace dans la neige.

Tous deux laissent en nos cœurs, et en nos mémoires, une marque indélébile que ce prix symbolise.

The Trophy Peter Bird / SPB rewards an adventurer who has shown a long-term commitment in an extreme environment.

This year, as a posthumous tribute it was awarded to Jean-Christophe Lafaille, who disappeared at the age of 40 during the winter of 2006 on the slopes of Makalu.

Apart from the difference in the environments - high mountains of Jean-Christophe and oceans of Peter, - there is a deep bond between the two men, and regardless of the chosen theatre, that was a celebration of the spirit of adventure. The story of tenacity and courage has been written by these men from the summits of the Himalayas to the middle of the Pacific.

Both Peter and Jean-Christophe lived in the company of danger. Both were taking risks they had measured and for which they knew the punishment. Both had agreed in advance to have to pay the price one day of the life they had chosen.

He who gives his name to the trophy has left a wake in the foam; he who receives it this year has left a trail in the snow.
Both left in our hearts and in our minds, an indelible mark that this award symbolizes.
