Emanuel Coindre set
out from Playa San Juan, Tenerife [ correction - he started from Gran
Canaria ] last week in a bid to cross to
Martinique in the Caribbean in his odd-looking vessel, the Ville de
Dinard, which carries little in the way of basic necessities and nothing
of comforts. His food store consists of the same kind of dehydrated
cuisine taken by astronauts. Coindre, a Breton sailing instructor, hopes
to reach his destination in approximately seventy days.
The Frenchman is no stranger to single-handed unusual Atlantic
crossings: at the end of 1999 he successfully made the trip in a
glorified pedalo which relied solely on leg power. On that occasion he
left from Mogán in Gran Canaria and washed up in Barbados on March 20,
2000. |
