Third Attempt To Row Atlantic Fails

Rower Planned Chatham To France Trip

POSTED: 7:55 a.m. EDT July 29, 2003

A Frenchman's third attempt to row across the Atlantic has failed.

Rough seas near Chatham toppled Emmanuel Condre's boat Monday, and sent the Coast Guard to his rescue. Coast Guard Petty Officer Charles Murray said there were 6-foot seas in the vicinity of the boat.

Although the boat capsized, Coindre managed to climb onto the hull. He contacted his father in France from a satellite phone, and his father notified a rescue center in France which in turn contacted the U.S. Coast Guard.

The "Lady Bird" foundered about 100 miles east of Chatham. Coindre, 30, was picked up by a rescue helicopter.

Coindre had planned to row 3,000 miles from Chatham to d'Ouessant, France.
