-- A French rower was airlifted from his boat off the coast of the
Canadian province of Nova Scotia yesterday after failing in an attempt
to cross the Atlantic Ocean, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported on
its Web site.
Jean Lukes, 39, began his voyage 14 days ago in Cape Cod, Massachusetts,
CBC said.
Lukes used a satellite phone to contact a rescue center in Gris-Nez,
France, saying he was ill. The French officials contacted a rescue
center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which sent a Cormorant helicopter to
pick up Lukes, CBC said.
Lukes was treated at a Halifax hospital and released.
According to the British-based Web site Ocean Rowing Society, this was
Lukes' fourth try to cross the Atlantic, CBC said.
