Solo rower touches land after epic journey

March 31,2001
English marathon rower Jim Shekhdar has stumbled onto the beach at North Stradbroke Island, off Queensland, after falling out of his boat at the end of his epic nine-month journey from Peru.

Mr Shekhdar is the first person to row across the Pacific without being resupplied.
He was forced to swim the last 30 metres on his own after his rowing boat, Le Shark, capsized in two-metre waves.

Mr Shekhdar left Peru in June last year and has spent 274 days on his own, rowing solo for the 13,000 kilometre journey.

British rower Jim Shekhdar became the first person to cross the Pacific Ocean under his own power unassisted .

About 100 spectators cheered as he was washed up onto the beach, including his wife and daughter.

Although he had to swim the last 30 metres to shore, he was judged by the Ocean Rowing Society to have completed the trip successfully.
