Letter from Kenneth F.Crutchlow, Executive Director of the Ocean Rowing Society
to Captains of

Ocean Row Events Challenger,  Oyster Shack
and ORCA
Regarding their intention of breaking the record for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat
set in 1992 by La Mondiale.
Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2007 19:51:38 +0000

To Captain Brown, Captain Chalk, Captain Finlay.

Re the soon to be attempts with the intention of breaking the record for rowing across the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat set in 1992 by La Mondiale.

It is my opinion that yours efforts at sea will be of considerable interest to the press both sides of the Atlantic as well as the ocean rowing community.

It would have been preferable that all 3 crews had Argos tracking device, but this will not be the case.

I suggest that certain agreements are made prior to your departure: such agreements are gentlemen's agreements. I have no doubt that each crew will and are expected to conduct themselves in the very best traditions of the sea and in a sportsmanlike fashion.

I. Each crew agrees to be monitored by some kind of device, in the case of La Mondiale - Argos tracking beacons; in the case of Oyster Shack Ocean Challenger - D plus; in the case of ORCA - a daily position phoned in to ORS Int. HQ.

2. As it did happen when Harboe and Samuelsen left New York, for the purity of record we ask you to agree to a neutral individual, mutually acceptable to all parties concerned, who shall inspect each boat checking for any material on board that could be used as kite or a sail.

3. Each crew may depart from any port in the Canary Islands (except El Hierro
* ) and may arrive at any port or land in the Caribbean.

4. The definition of a crossing in order to claim a record must be ''Land to Land''

Each crew member is invited (but not required) to become a member of the ORS Int (50.00GBP per year)

I as Executive Director of ORS International do hereby state that we will conduct ourselves without fear or favour to any crew.

I take this chance to wish each Captain and your crew a safe crossing and may it be truly the adventure of a lifetime for you all

Yours sincerely

Kenneth F. Crutchlow

* In order to claim the record crews should choose a  route equal but not less in distance than  that original of La Mondiale, which was
2.935 miles (4.723 km) (2.550 n/m) - distance (as the crow flies) from La Palma to Martinique.
FYI:
Distance from El Hierro to Antigua is
2.873 miles (4.624 km) (2.496 n/m)

Distance from Gran Canaria to Barbados is
2.993 miles (4.816 km) (2600 n/miles)
