He died from heart attack at  35  -

Two films of oceanrowers were among the films presented at the festival:
"Virgin Row" - Oliver Hick's row across the Atlantic W-E from New York, USA to UK in 2005  and
"Recontre avec deux fêlés de l'Atlantique" - the first crossing of an ocean in a kite-boat by Anne Quéméré in 2006

Ten years ago Peter Bird was lost at sea when attempting the Pacific W-E crossing.
His son Louis Bird (14)  presented  'The Peter Bird Trophy For Tenacity and Perseverance' (established in 1997) to

Oceanrowers who  gathered for a scheduled meeting at the London HQ of the Ocean Rowing Society (International) 
 yesterday, September 3rd, started their meeting with a Minute's Silence in memory of
David Johnstone and John Hoare -
the  first oceanrowers of the XXc. and the first oceanrowers who lost their lives at sea 40 years ago.
