GALE HITS ROW PAIR

12/05/2001

TWO soldiers bidding to set a world rowing record have seen off their first challenge. Royal Marines Tim Welford and Dominic Mee hope to be the first to row across the North Pacific Ocean unaided. But the 5,000-mile journey was almost scuppered on day two by a tropical storm. The commandos toughed it out, however, and were last night back on course to arrive in San Francisco in October. The Mirror-sponsored epic is the sport's holy grail. The pair set off from Japan in their 24ft boat, called Crackers, last Sunday. Before they left, Tim, 32, and Dominic, 30, said: "We're doing great and roaring to go."
