Pieter Hennipman
dreamt of rowing the Atlantic solo, he had done
some sailing before and expected that the days
he had spent at sea would stand him in good
stead.
The reality was proved very different to his
expectations - his watermaker failed, he was
surprised that he found the cabin
''claustrophobic" and even more surprised by a
weather front that instead of assisting his
south-westerly progress pushed his boat Atlantic
Wholff back by more than 100 miles.
Peter decided to take the opportunity of
returning to land when the Portuguese Coast
Guard vessel Auriga happened upon him (he did
not activate his EPIRB ). Due to adverse weather
the boat was left at sea but ORS Int. continues
to track it with Argos Satellite beacon
transmitting the positions.
Within days he had made his decision not to go
to sea again, he had read about the trials and
tribulations of
Victor Gavrishev re his dramatic
attempt to row from La Gomera and announced that
if Victor could retrieve the boat he could use
it for his row to the Caribbean.
Today in Madeira Kenneth F. Crutchlow met with
Captain Felix Marques (2nd in Command of the
Coast Guard Madeira) and informed him that the
power boat Grumpy is checking weather
and when weather is favourable he intends to put
to sea and try to retrieve Atlantic Wholff. The
recovery effort is contingent on favourable
weather conditions, Portuguese Coastguard
approval and terms to be agreed between Victor
and Miguel, the boat owner. |
