DINGHY MUM, 54, IN 2,900-MILE SEA TREK

A WIDOW of 54 has become the oldest person to row across the Atlantic. Jan Meeks made the 2,900-mile journey with son Dan, 23, only two years after sitting in a dinghy for the first time.

The pair - who have just returned home - also became the first mother and son team of trans-atlantic rowers. They took 101 days to go from Tenerife to the Bahamas in their 23ft vessel during the first rowing race across the ocean.

The mum-of-two said last night: "We knew we were going to come last but we never thought of pulling out.

"We were the only team which drank a gin and tonic with their dinner and put up Christmas decorations on the boat. I had only been rowing once before I started training for the race - on the Serpentine in Hyde Park."

Jan's adventure began when Dan asked if she fancied spending Christmas in the Caribbean.

The pair kept each other going. Jan, of Chipping Norton, Oxon, said: "We didn't argue once. The thought of the fantastic party we would have when we arrived was enough to keep me going."
