The Cornish flag will be flown later this year on the bow of a 24-foot
rowing boat for an epic voyage across the Atlantic.
Jerry Rogers, treasurer of the Celtic Congress, and a friend, Taffy
Oliver, are planning to row 3,000 miles from the Canaries to Antigua to
raise funs for CLIC, the children's cancer and leukaemia charity.
Originally from Mullion, Mr Rogers, an accountent who now lives in
Sandhurst, Berkshire, is being supported by members of the congress's
Cornish branch.
Tony Piper, branch secretary, said: "We all wish him well and are
delighted he will be flying the Cornish flag on the boat".
Mr Rogers, aged 56, and Mr Oliver, a 55 year-old fireman, are both
marathon canoeists.
"We are fitter than the average mid 50 year-old but not as fit as we
want to be.
"But this is an endurance test for which we will need, and I think have,
the mental calibre to push on when it hurts."
Crewing a specially designed ocean rowing boat, they plan to set out at
the end of October and hope to reach Antigua by Christmas. |

Mr Rogers, who hopes to bring the boat to Cornwall before the voyage,
added :"I had the idea that rowing 3,000 miles might be fun and a great
way to raise money for
CLIC.
"One of the problems we will face is that we must carry all our food,
medical supplies, safety equipment, navigation and communications
equipment.
"Only our drinking water will be taken from the sea and produced using a
pump powered by solar panels."
