A challenge for those with physical challenges

April 20 2005

By Joe Segura Staff writer

Although the Ocean Fours Rowing Race is more than a year away, the search is on for a fourth marathon oarsman.
Crew members all have physical challenges.

Long Beach resident Angela Madsen, a rowing champion and paraplegic, is one of the members of the team.

The race will begin in June 2006, and will last about 60 days.

Four-members teams, in identical 29-foot ocean rowing boats, will race across the North Atlantic. They will depart from New York and race toward Plymouth, England with the goal of increasing public awareness of disabilities.

Another goal is to send a message of hope to those who have suffered serious traumas in their lives.

One of Madsen's team members is French marathon oarsman Jo Le Guen, who has rowed the Atlantic twice once solo.

In 2000, to draw public attention to ocean pollution, he attempted to row solo across the Pacific a feat never accomplished. However, he was forced to abandon the 5,580-mile trek after 60 days due to gangrene, which resulted in the loss of all his toes.

The fourth team member needs to be between 18 or 65.

No experience is necessary. But the key requirements are excellent physical condition and a high level of motivation.

The team members will encounter the extreme North Atlantic environment, and will be confined to a 29-foot living space for nearly two months not unlike, the recruiters note, astronauts living aboard the international space station.
