A relative of legendary World War II German
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel has been plucked from the stormy Atlantic
while trying to row the ocean alone.
Andreas Rommel, grand-nephew of the "Desert Fox," was 450 miles off the
coast of Canada when he ran into a storm.
Rommel's distress signal alerted a Canadian bulk carrier who rescued him
in weather described as "atrocious." He was flown by helicopter to
Gander in Newfoundland. He was not believed to be seriously hurt, the
Daily Record said.
Rommel, 34, set off from Cape Cod in July despite warnings that he was
leaving dangerously late in the season and was still 2,500 miles short
of his destination.
Before his bid was stopped by the storm he was nearly run down by a
tanker in fog and was caught up in hurricane Alex. |
