ROWERS RESIGNED TO TURKEY AT SEA

11:00 - 08 December 2003

Teignmouth's Matt Stowers has resigned himself to rowing through the Christmas period. Matt is taking part in the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Barbados with RAF colleague Mark Jacklin.

At the weekend they had 1,100 miles still to go before reaching their destination.

The duo have had to start rationing their food as they hadn't anticipated the row taking so long but have saved a freeze-dried turkey meal for Christmas Day.

They are more than half way across and have opened a box of goodies

Mark said: "We have reduced our food for now. We don't anticipate being out here a huge amount of time, but for now we'll conserve supplies just in case the weather turns again."

The rowers have suffered from bad weather, but say their morale has picked up.

They are rowing for the charity The Philip Green Memorial Trust which raises funds for children with physical disabilities and learning disabilities.

Three crews have already completed the race.
