Rob MUNSLOW

ST JOHNS, CANADA TO THE UK - depart May 11th 2006

Current solo record stands at 55 days
“I hate rowing !”

Rob Munslow began dreaming of rowing the Atlantic at the age of 15, after reading the incredible story of Tom McClean, the first man to row the North Atlantic solo in 1969. Although opportunists encounter it was one, which had a profound impact on the direction of Rob’s life.
“This is the biggest challenge of my life, far from my comfort zone a test of my character. The route is 2100 miles long and I aim to beat the 55 day record”
To accomplish his dream Rob will have to overcome huge waves up to 60ft tall, storms, the notoriously rough conditions of the Grand Banks as well as sharks, whales and sea sickness! With only his oars and his muscles he will be at the mercy   of mother nature.
In 2005 he was part of the Vivaldi Atlantic Four  - a team of four men who set the world record for the fastest unsupported crossing of the North Atlantic as well as being the first four man team to complete the route.  However Rob is not content with this amazing achievement and now wishes to step further out of his comfort zone and challenge himself and the record of his inspiration Tom McClean.
The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's oceans. It occupies an elongated S-shaped basin extending in a north-south direction. It's divided into the North Atlantic and South Atlantic by equatorial counter-currents at about 8 degrees north latitude. The Atlantic Ocean covers approximately 20% of the Earth's surface.

Go as a pilgrim and seek out danger
Far from comfort and the well lit-avenues of life.
Pit your very soul against the unknown
And seek stimulation in the company of the brave.
Experience cold and hunger, heat and thirst
And survive to see another challenge and another dawn.
Only then will you be at peace with yourself
And able to know and to say:
“I looked down on the farthest side of the mountain
And, fulfilled and understanding all, I am cold and hunger, heat and thirst
And survive to see another challenge and another dawn.
Only then will you be at peace with yourself
And able to know and to say:
“I looked down on the farthest side of the mountain
And, fulfilled and understanding all, I am truly content
That I lived a full life
And one that was of my own choice”.

Rob’s boat is being shipped to Canada on Wednesday 12th April, although he is still in need of some important communications kit – can anyone help ????

<<  The adventure will begin from St. John’s, Newfoundland on May 11th 2006  >>
