Rower Aiming for Record Books

By Sam Marsden, PA

A British adventurer is hoping to make it into the record books by becoming the first person to row across three oceans.

Simon Chalk, 32, from Newton Abbot, Devon, will set off from Peru in April in an attempt to row 4,100 miles single-handed across the Pacific.

The oarsman completed a crossing of the Atlantic in 1997 and became the youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean in 2003.

His latest voyage, which terminates in French Polynesia, is much longer than his two previous ocean crossings and is expected to take 120-140 days.

His purpose-built 29ft boat is named Britannia III after the vessel in which Britons Sylvia Cook and John Fairfax crossed the Pacific in 1971-72.

Mr Chalk said: “Having completed crossings of two different oceans, the natural progression is to attempt to row the Pacific.

“The Pacific Ocean has always been referred to as the ‘big daddy’ among ocean rowers but I am fully prepared for the challenge ahead, with a fantastic boat and a strong ground crew behind me.”
