Stuart Boreham, a Clerical Medical Investment Manager for the HBOS
Insurance and Investment Division, is set to battle rough seas and
stormy weather this October, in a bid to become the first physically
disabled rower to successfully cross the Atlantic Ocean. The challenge
is part of the HBOS Foundation's pledge to raise £1 million for
Macmillan Cancer Relief in 2003, and so fund eight Macmillan nurses
across the UK.
Stuart, who has cerebral palsy, will attempt to row unassisted and
unsupported across the North Atlantic in his purpose built ocean
rowing boat “Macmillan Spirit”. He will set off from La Gomera in the
Canaries on 12th October, and is set to arrive in Barbados in the
Caribbean approximately 80 days later having rowed, navigated and
maintained the boat single-handedly for some 2,900 miles.
Stuart has already travelled alone around the world, having taken part
in the BT Global Challenge round the world yacht race. He said:
"Achievement in any walk of life is about belief in yourself. Coping
with a disability is similar in many ways to living with a cancer
diagnosis, which is one of the reasons I named my boat 'Macmillan
Spirit'. By having determination and courage people have the ability
to cope with, and overcome, huge obstacles in their lives.” DV
