Gulf stream

The gulfstream starts in the Florida Straits and is discernible to
about 25W from thermal imagery and altimetry data.  After that it weakens
and is not very detectable. It is usually about 60 miles wide and flow
speeds average 2-4 knots.  However, during this year's Newport to Bermuda
yacht race, the racers encountered 4-6 knots of current in the stream.  The
speed of the stream weakens as it proceeds to the East.  It flow from
Florida northeast to the Outer banks of North Carolina where it turns to the
east and flows across the Atlantic.  Instabilities in it create warm eddies,
rotating clockwise, north of the stream and cold eddies circulating
counterclockwise south of the stream.

Update from Jenifer Clark re. Gulf stream

An altimetry map of the area. Yes, they are in the stream. The sea temps are the telltale sign as well as the difference in sea heights as can be seen in this chart. Note that the sea heights vary from -20 cm to +65cm over a short distance. They are likely in the north wall of the stream.
