ROWING TEAM ARE PICKED UP |
|
09:00 - 04 July 2002 |
| A british team's attempt to shatter a world ocean rowing record ended in disaster, after it had to be picked up by a passing ship. The members of the Skandia Ocean Row team are now on their way to Aberdeen after being picked up in the mid-Atlantic by the Bar Protector, a dive ship, at 7.30am. The team's boat, the Skandia Atlantic Spirit, which was recovered in the rescue, midway between St Johns, Newfoundland, and Cornwall, became permanently disabled after the rudder broke. The team, which left Canada on June 11, was aiming to be the first rowing-record attempt to reach the UK mainland. It completed half the journey before the attempt had to be abandoned. |
