Why take part in the rowing race?
"I have been captivated by the dream of rowing the Atlantic ever since I was a schoolboy in Ipswich, when Ridgway and Blyth achieved their feat. My school was situated on an estuary close to Ipswich port. The night I first heard of the Ridgway/Blyth triumph I was so inspired I rowed across the busy shipping channel in pitch darkness. It was terrifying and I thought at the time the two soldiers must have been mad. But the hankering to test myself the same way has never left me."
Why take part in the rowing race?
"I was raised near Aldershot, the southern English army town where Ridgway and Blyth were stationed at the time of their Atlantic crossing. I later read about the feat and, coincidentally, used to pass their old parade ground on my way to school. When I later met Jon I found here was someone possessed of a similar spirit of adventure to my own, and who really believed we could emulate and even surpass the soldiers' achievement. It seemed less and less likely as the years went by, but now the race format has given us the added impetus to try and turn the dream into reality."
Entitled to say, mid-Atlantic: "We are now mid-Atlantic. Open that bottle." Entitled to say, mid-Atlantic: "Who built this boat, anyway?"
