Tim was born in Chatham, Kent in 1970 and went to school at King’s School, Rochester. He represented the school at many levels in a wide variety of sports and activities, but he concentrated on rugby and swimming, until he was in the Sixth Form when he took up rowing. After a year working as a junior teacher at a boys’ school in Queensland, Australia, Tim went to Southampton University to study German. He joined the rowing club and competed in the 1st VIII for two years at many events including Henley, twice. In 1993 he cycled across Canada for charity from Halifax to Vancouver – a solo effort that took him 4000 miles over eight weeks, covering an average of over 90 miles a day. After graduating in 1994, he went to RMA Sandhurst to train to be an Army Officer, where a year later, he commissioned into The Royal Artillery. He continued his rowing both at Sandhurst and in the Gunners and reached the quarter-final of the Thames Challenge Cup at Henley in 1995, as well as rowing for the Army later the same year. Tim joined 5th Regiment Royal Artillery, based in Catterick, North Yorkshire and was a Troop Commander for 18 months before taking command of a 50 man multi-national unit on a UN tour to Cyprus in 1997. Following this, he returned to regimental duties until leaving the Forces in August 1998.  He now works for an IT services company in London. Among Tim’s other achievements are sailing across the Atlantic, cycling off -road across the Pyrenees, cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End, taking part in two marathons (one around Snowdonia in 3hrs 34mins), several triathlons including a half-ironman and many long distance walks around the world. In addition to training for the 2001 race Tim is hoping to reach the top of Mt Aconcagua in the near future. Jo was born in Birmingham in 1972. He was educated at Kings School Worcester, where he won a choral scholarship and represented the school at 1st team level in rugby, rowing and cricket. After completing his A levels he travelled to New Zealand to play rugby in Wellington and on his return attended Carnegie School of Physical Education in Leeds.  During this time Jo played a lot of rugby, notably for Nottingham and Headingley rugby clubs, and was chosen to play in the Welsh Under 21 squad. He entered RMA Sandhurst in September 1994, where he met Tim. Following his time in the army and a brief spell in business he went to Cambridge University in 1997 to study for a PGCE. Whilst at Cambridge, Jo played rugby for the University and captained the 2nd XV. His other interests include swimming and skiing and he has also competed in the Tall Ships Race.  Jo recently spend a period of time working as a PE teacher and House Master at Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet and now works at The Perse School, Cambridge where he is a teaches PE and rugby .
