TOTAL:   £ 27,847

The above list was compiled for insurance purposes and gives the full retail value of all items. For our entry we set up a company with the local Hospice who we were fund raising for and therefore benefited by being able to reclaim the VAT on purchased items. This gave an overall saving of 17.5%. However this does mean of the boat is sold it is liable for VAT which has to be added to the sale price. We also had trade accounts with various suppliers which enabled us to acquire discounts of over 50% in some cases. However for the sake of the above I have reduced the total cost by 40% to give a very conservative idea of the real cost of boat and equipment.

In the list above items marked with a * denote items we bought with cash, items marked ++ denote items that were donated as sponsorship in kind.

With this in mind the total value of the exercise paying cash at retail prices is as above:
£ 27,847
Subtracting the items we had donated in kind this total was reduced £10,347 by giving a total of:
£ 17,500
This figure then subject a further reduction of 40% to cover re claimed VAT and trade discounts on purchased items gives a total cash figure of:
£ 10,500

I included a total boat building figure of £10,000. The boat kit cost £2350.00 and the rest of the materials were almost all donated. It took 500 man hours to get to basic build level which enabled us to take her on the water and do training rows in sheltered conditions. I would estimate at least another 200 or so man hours were taken to prepare her for sea. So the actual cost of the boat build as we did it ourselves was probably around £3000 including the price of the kit. So a further £7000 could be subtracted from the above figure giving a final total of:
£ 3500.

ADDITIONAL COSTS:

Insurance:  Ward Evans  £900
Shipping £400
Flights: Canary Is: £400
Barbados: £800
Accommodation: CI & Bar: £2000
Boat Shipment: Out CI: £2000
Trailer:  £600
Back: £2200
Iridium Phone: Set: £500
Calls: £2000
Challenge Business: Fee: £11800
Tracking System:   £500
Gym & Training:   £4000

Total:   £ 28100

All the above additional costs are probably unavoidable apart from the Challenge Business fee if you decide to do your row without them, (probably a good move!)

So in total cash terms it probably cost us £28100 plus £3500 giving a total of £ 31,600.

In order to have done it from scratch with a budget at retail prices and little involvement from us as crew I reckon you could do an Atlantic Row with the Challenge Business for around
£56,000 minimum. However with time, huge commitment and a lot of hard graft and persuasion you can do it for around the £30-£35K mark in pure cash terms. Anything above £60,000, including the use of a boat builder you are either very rich, have unlimited funds that you don't care what you do with, or need to move to another planet!….After all this isn't Formula 1!!!!!!
