2006 AWARDS

 

Impressive success for the 2006 edition of « Les Ecrans de l’Aventure », the International Adventure Film Festival located in Dijon (Burgundy), organised by the French NGO “La Guilde Europeenne du Raid”.

The audience is larger every year, with 10.000 + spectators from Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th in Dijon Auditorium. Quality adventure documentaries were presented for the first time to the public. Once again, the Auditorium sheltered surprising and enthusiastic international encounters, rich in projects and future co-operations opportunities.

President of film jury Yuichiro Miura, from Japan, announced 2006 awards in presence of Yves Berteloot, Deputy Mayor of Dijon, in charge of Cultural affairs, Hubert de Chevigny, president of « La Guilde Europeene du Raid », and Patrick Edel, Guilde’s general manager and president of the festival.

 

TOISON D’OR FOR THE ADVENTURE FILM
AMAZONIAN VERTIGO

Director: Evrard Wendenbaum – Produced by: Migoo productions
France – 52 minutes – 2006 – avant-premiere.
The waters of Salto Angel reach ground after a 1.000 m jump from the Auyan plateau (Venezuela), thus forming the highest water falls in the world. An international dream team of climbers: Arnaud Petit (Fr), Stephanie Bodet (Fr), Igor Martinez (Venezuela), Tony Arbones (Sp), Nicolas Kalisz (Fr) and Evrard Wendenbaum (Fr), climbed the pristine wall, untouched until 2005.


JURY’SPECIAL PRIZE
LIGHT OF THE HIMALAYA

Director: Michael Brown – Produced by: Serac Adventure Films
USA – 69 minutes – 2006 – avant-premiere.
Deep within the world’s highest mountain chain lives a people with the highest rate of blindness, due to cataract. Doctors and climbers of the “Himalayan Cataract” project decided to help, and climbed to 7.000 m, also bringing their experience to American and Nepalese eye surgeons and ophthalmologists.


JEAN-MARC BOIVIN PRIZE
KILIMANJARO, GOING FOR BROKE

This prize is an award for the authenticity of an adventure. It was remitted in presence of Francoise Boivin, wife of the late French climber Jean-Marc Boivin, to: Jamie Andrew, David Lim, Pete Steyne and Paul Pritchard

Director: Richard Heap, Ben Bevan-Pritchard – Produced by: Slackjaw Films
UK – 52 minutes – 2006 – avant-premiere.
Four exceptional climbers, Jamie Andrew, David Lim, Pete Steyne and Paul Pritchard, were injured during one of their adventures. Despite their handicap, they decided to climb the Kilimanjaro, highest summit in Africa, sharing a beautiful adventure spirit.


DIJON YOUNG JURY’S PRIZE
MARCO, ETOILE FILANTE (MARCO, SHOOTING STAR)

France – 52 minutes – 2006 – avant-premiere.
On Sept. 8th, 2002, at the altitude of 8.848 m, in a low oxygen atmosphere, feet in his snowboard and head already in the sky, Marco Siffredi, 23, starts from the summit of Mount Everest. He had already achieved the first descent of Everest a year before. However, on that day, his track was lost. The director sketches in this film the portrait of an exceptional young man, far from usual glide movies cliches.


YOUNG DIRECTOR PRIZE

UN DESERT VERTICAL  (A VERTICAL DESERT)

Director: Daniel du Lac – Produced by: Altisphere.
France – 46 minutes – 2006 – avant-premiere.
Sun, exhausting heat, sand in the eyes and water escaping from the body… Mali (Western Africa) has everything to weaken even the strongest will. The High Gourma region is an ideal place for modern climbing, full of unexplored tracks. Head climber, Daniel du Lac is leading here a sahelian climb, made of encounters, discoveries, wilderness and achievement.

TOISON D’OR FOR THE ADVENTURER OF THE YEAR
 (highest distinction for a personal adventure)
Awarded by Hubert de Chevigny, President of the Guilde Europeenne du Raid to:

The international team who climbed the Salto Angel in April 2006: Arnaud Petit (Fr), Stephanie Bodet (Fr), Igor Martinez (Venezuela), Tony Arbones (Spain), Nicolas Kalisz (Fr) and Evrard Wendenbaum (Fr).


PETER BIRD’S TROPHY
Sponsored by SPB

 this trophy created in 1997 is a reconnaissance for perseverance and tenacity in an adventure. It was awarded this year to young British Oliver Hicks, who rowed across the Atlantic West to East in summer 2005.


ALAIN BOMBARD PRIZE

Created in 2002, this prize is an award for an exceptional adventure, with a teaching value. It was awarded to: Anne Quemere, for her kite crossing of the Atlantic, from New York to Douarnenez. A real premiere in terms of navigation, as it was achieved on a prototype boat equipped with a kite sail, conceived in co-operation with the naval architect Marc Ginisty.


TOISON D’OR FOR THE ADVENTURE BOOK
 (distinction for the best adventure book of the year)

The 2006 Toison d’Or of the adventure book was awarded to: Isabelle Autissier and Erik Orsenna for their book:
« Salut au Grand Sud » (Salute to the Great South), Stock publishing.


2006 adventure film jury
was presided by
Yuichiro Miura, (Japan) « The skier of the Everest »,
and holding multiple records for skiing descents of the highest summits in the seven continents.

21 films presented: 19 competing films including 8 international productions, 5 films shown for the first time to the public, and 11 previews.
More than a hundred guests: directors, producers, adventurers, sailors, climbers, explorers...
Traffic: 10 000 spectators within the Festival’s 3 days, which makes 1.500 more than 2005.
